About the Artist

The Story

Dawn Elizabeth Waithe is a multidisciplinary artist whose work blends various mediums to create emotionally resonant and thought-provoking images. From drawing and painting in acrylics and watercolors to sculpting with polymer clay, building, constructing, and assembling collages, Dawn embraces a diverse range of artistic expressions. Her art often serves as a powerful conduit for exploring complex themes related to mental health, human rights, and social justice.

Born and raised in Akron, Ohio's Kenmore neighborhood, Dawn's childhood was deeply influenced by her natural surroundings. Overlooking downtown Akron from her hillside home, she spent countless hours immersed in the woods, fostering a profound connection with nature that continues to inspire her creative process. While her childhood also presented significant challenges, including experiences with abuse and subsequent struggles with depression, these experiences have become a driving force behind her advocacy work.

Dawn is a passionate voice for mental health awareness and support, drawing from her personal journey to empower others and promote healing. Her marriage to a Black man and the experience of raising biracial children have opened her eyes to the realities of racism and discrimination, igniting a fervent commitment to human rights advocacy. She strives to use her art to bridge racial divides, raise awareness for people of color and other underrepresented and underprivileged communities, and contribute to a more equitable society.

The Work

Working across painting, digital art, and mixed media, she layers texture, symbol, and color into pieces that feel both timeless and alive. No two originals are alike — each one carries its own spirit.
